Deep in the forest, there once could be heard, the beautiful song of a Diggie-Dum bird.
His song rose above all the other birds' notes, compared to the Diggie, the rest sung like goats!
Fairies and animals gathered around to dance to the song that was sweetest in sound.
One day said the Diggie-Dum bird, "That's enough!" and he sat for a week with his feathers a-fluff.
A tiny young fairy climbed up on his wing, and said, "Dearest Diggie-Dum, why won't you sing?"
"My song is the BEST, so I hear them all say. I'll not sing again 'til the King comes my way!"
The Diggie stopped singing, for none but the King. For all of the fairies, 'twas quite a sad thing.
The rest of the birds in the forest felt bad. They didn't like seeing the fairies so sad!
They gathered together and made up plan. "We're not the Diggie, but we'll do what we can!"
The birds of the forest sang out day and night, to help them get through the Diggie-Dum plight.
Soon the fairies and animals danced all around, but the Diggie-Dum STILL would not make a sound!
The birds in the forest sang out with delight! They practiced and practiced with all of their might.
The songs of the forest were played all day long 'til the fairies forgot all about Diggie's song.
A long time had passed since the fairies had heard the magical sound of the Diggie-Dum bird.
One day while the fairies and animals played, a noise filled the woods, but by what was it made?
A gold-covered carriage appeared on the road, that passed through the forest, to the royal abode.
Out stepped a man robed in red with a crown. The fairies and animals bowed to the ground.
"I've lived near this forest for so very long, and I've come to hear the most beautiful song!"
The Diggie-Dum flew up, 'twas was his time to sing! He smoothed out his feathers and lifted one wing.
The other birds paused for the Diggie-Dum's song, but the noise that came out sounded TERRIBLY wrong!
The Diggie-Dum's song, once so sweet and serene, had, without practice, become a mere scream!
The Diggie's eyes widened, how could this be so! He'd waited so long for the King's royal show!
The birds of the forest heard Diggie-Dum wail, but could not let Diggie-Dum's grand moment fail.
The birds all joined in with the Diggie-Dum bird, 'til their beautiful song was all that was heard.
The King looked quite pleased, "'Twas more fair than I'd dreamed! The most beautiful song in the world, so it seemed!"
His carriage rode off with a wave of his hand, and the Diggie-Dum bird said, "I don't understand!"
"Why were you so kind?" He said with a sigh, then hung his head low with a tear in his eye.
"I was not so nice to each one of you, but to me you were friends, most kind and most true!"
"I thought that my song was too good for my friends, but you were much better than me, in the end!"
A wise old owl turned his head to the side, then flew next to Diggie with one long swift glide.
"We all make mistakes, at one time or another, but we can improve if we'll just help each other!"
The tiny young fairy climbed up on his wing, and said, "Dearest Diggie, we want you to sing!"
The fairies and animals gathered around. "We'll help you remember your beautiful sound!"
Deep in the forest, there once could be heard, the beautiful song of a Diggie-Dum bird.
But now no one hears the lone Diggie-Dum sing, and some may believe that's a very strange thing.
But fairies and animals gather around, to dance to the song that is sweetest in sound,
And all of the birds sing together so sweet, that no one can tell where one ends and one meets!
They say that the Diggie remembered his song, then taught it to every bird in the throng!
So if you hear music, so clear and so pure, it just might be Diggie, but you can't be sure!
